Overcoming Pornography Addiction

Pornography addiction is one of the most extended sexual addictions. People who are addicted to pornography give excessive importance to pornography while disregarding their normal life.

As with other obsessive-compulsive disorders, it slowly causes the isolation of the addicted person. Usually, pornography addicts prefer using pornography rather than actually developing a normal social and sexual life.

Causes Of Pornographic Addiction

Although there were cases of pornography addiction since pornography itself was made publicly available, it is true that today’s main factor leading to porn addiction is the Internet.

Frequently, a person’s first contact with pornography is made online, and then the addiction evolves to actual “real life” magazines and other literature. The wide availability and the fact that usually the Internet porn user is anonymous and unidentifiable make this specific form of pornography the strongest and more addictive form of porn. In addition, the addictive power of internet pornography is increased by the existence of free porn material.

However, the offer does not always justify the demand, and the fact that there is pornographic material available does not guarantee that the internet is a dangerous environment that will turn anyone who accidentally discovers this kind of material a hopeless addict. The real cause of this (and any) addiction resides in a person’s psyche.

Symptoms Of Pornographic Addiction

People suffering from addiction to pornography may show many of these symptoms: increasing need for more and more strange and/or hardcore material, recurrent fantasies about certain practices observed in porn movies, frustration due to the decreasing desire of actually having normal sex with another person, self-isolation due to embarrassment, considering any possible sexual partners as mere sex objects, tension, dissatisfaction and depression after actual sexual intercourse.

The financial life of a porn addict is usually compromised due to the large amounts of money spent in subscriptions to pornographic magazines, payments for memberships in internet web sites, and prostitution (a prostitute is like a porn actress in the sense that she/he plays a role for money, therefore the addict can experiment his/her fantasies in real life).

Overcoming Pornography Addiction

Many treatments have been suggested to overcome addiction to porn. The most effective of those treatments consists on an adequate psychological therapy.

Understanding sex as a healthy practice where two people look for mutual satisfaction is the first step to recovery. Of course, the complete elimination of all pornographic material owned by the addict is essential.

Once a person has experienced true, meaningful sexual intercourse within a healthy relationship with a person who cares and enjoys being with him/her, the addiction usually disappears or gets included in the couple’s normal sex life. Understanding that sexual partners are human beings with feelings instead of objects usually leads to overcoming pornography addiction.

Prevention Of Pornographic Addiction

As with other types of addiction, the key to prevention is adequate and honest information. When a person is aware of the benefits of a normal sexual life and understands the difference between normal curiosity and obsession for pornography, he/she is much less likely to develop an addiction to porn.
